SURF & RESCUE: PROJECT PROMOTES WATER RESCUE THROUGH SURFING ON PORTUGUESE BEACHES

Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN) and the Portuguese Surfing School Association (AESDP) establish a partnership with the aim of strengthening the link between surfing and water rescue. Free training for coaches and technicians marks the beginning of the partnership and will take place this month.

It is well known that Surf Schools and Coaches make an important contribution to the safety and rescue of beaches in Portugal, as well as the entire surfing community in general. In fact, these are one of the main protection and safety agents for beaches outside the bathing season. However, many of the practitioners do not have an up-to-date and adequate knowledge of rescue techniques, first aid and Basic Life Support and, in most cases, these rescue actions take place in an informal way and without recording the occurrences.

It is based on the knowledge of this reality that the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN) and the Portuguese Surfing School Association (AESDP) established this cooperative partnership, whose beginning will be marked by the holding of 3 Surf & Rescue training sessions on three beaches different. These actions mark the end of the bathing season and will train these technicians to ensure safety along the coast throughout the year. The dates and locations of these trainings are as follows:

23 September | Costa da Caparica

26 September | Sagres

30 September | Matosinhos

This training is aimed at Coaches and other members and workers of Surfing Schools and Clubs, lasts for 7 hours and allocates 1.4 Credit Units for the renewal of the IPDJ Coaches Card. Participation is free and limited to 30 subscribers per share.

After the realization and assessment of these actions, the ISN and AESDP will announce the plan of joint initiatives to be carried out in the future.
