JOÃO MACEDO

João Macedo, the son of Portuguese parents, was born in June 1st of 1977 in New Haven, Connecticut. He started surfing by the age of 7 in Praia Grande, Sintra. He found in the toughness of the Atlantic ocean what would become he’s greatest life passion.

After returning from an exchange program in Newcastle, Australia, he finished his degree in Economy and in 2000 founded his surf school in Praia Grande – the Surf Academia João Macedo. In 2002, he started developing his teaching methodology “Method 7”, which was published in the book “How to be a Surfer”, and is based in 7 levels of surf development through the knowledge and application of 7 different maneuvers to reach an advanced level of surfing.

João is the first European professional surfer to qualify for the WSL Big Wave World Tour, and currently still represents Portugal in the big wave arena, while keeping his passion for teaching and for transmitting the fundamental values of respect and harmony with nature.
