The second action of the “Surf & Rescue” initiative, which brings together the Portuguese Surf School Association (AESDP) and the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN), took place in Sagres on Saturday, with the support of Vila Municipality of the Bishop. The action was intended to reinforce the role of Surf Schools in supporting aquatic rescue, thus aiming to reinforce safety on Portuguese beaches throughout the year.
This training, aimed at Coaches and technicians from the Surf Schools and Surf Camps, took place throughout the day at Mareta beach, on a very sunny and calm day, having exhausted the 30 enrollment limit imposed by the current pandemic situation.
The participation of surfers and Surf Coaches in rescues and rescues at sea is an increasingly present reality in Portugal and this action has contributed to empowering those on the front lines throughout the year, the Surf Schools, at the highest level. recent rescue techniques, first aid and Basic Life Support.
This second edition was attended by professional Algarve big wave surfer Alex Botelho, who participated in the entire training and reinforced the importance of the entire surfing community having the necessary knowledge to be able to act in emergency situations at sea. The participation of this athlete, used to facing the most extreme conditions, is a testament to the relevance of this initiative, not only for members linked to surf education, but for the entire national community.
“Alex's presence is very positive – the fact that an athlete of his level, with so much knowledge in this area, highlights the importance of this training for him, only reinforces the relevance of what we are doing with the ISN and gives us too much strength to continue. In addition, we all know what a great athlete he is and the experience he brings, which greatly enriches the training itself by sharing the knowledge and experiences it provides”, said Afonso Teixeira, Executive Director of the Portuguese Surf School Association (AESDP).
This was the second of the three Surf & Rescue actions this month, after passing through Costa da Caparica on the 23rd and which will end at Praia de Matosinhos on Wednesday. The action had the support of the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, which was represented by Vice-President Rute Silva.
The promoters guarantee that “Surf & Rescue” is just the first initiative of a broader set of actions that will be promoted in partnership between ISN and AESDP to increase safety on Portuguese beaches.
